According to DSP Pawan Giri, spokesperson at MTPD, hunt for the lost vehicles was carried out after the owners filed complaints. “The traffic personnel with the VSU carried out the search in plainclothes. It indeed took time to locate the vehicles but the result has been satisfactory,” he said.
The police has already recovered and handed over 331 lost vehicles to their owners till date this fiscal year. Thanks to the traffic´s intense recovery operation of late, only 788 people have reported their vehicles missing as compared to 1,332 within the same period last year.
“We have seen 40.8 percent drop in complaints of missing vehicles in the last one year. We are still working hard to curb the problem,” Giri said.
Giri stressed that the negligence and ignorance of the vehicle owners is the prime reason for the loss of vehicles. “They park bikes and scooters anywhere. There is a high possibility of the vehicles being stolen when they are parked at lonely places. Moreover, some people leave their vehicles unattended for long hours,” he said. “The lack of reliable lock system in the vehicle and security system, and leaving it in open areas overnight have made things easier for the thieves,” he added.
