KATHMANDU, March 26: Nepali Congress (NC) leader Dr Shekhar Koirala has said that the country is in a serious condition.

Speaking at the House of Representatives meeting on Sunday, Dr Koirala said that the country is seriously ill, adding that the entrepreneurs are in a desperate state of mind, the taxpayers are disappointed, and the commercial cities are deserted.

"I found the taxpayers disappointed; those who are trying to survive by doing business here are in a desperate state of mind. Our nation is in a sick state," he said, "Everyone's business has decreased. It is normal for industry production to fall after business declines. Commercial cities are being deserted. According to the recent census, one-third of working-age Nepalis do not earn anything. What could be a worse situation than this?”

Koirala said that this is the first sign of political failure. He opined that parliament, government and opposition parties should stand together according to the wishes of the citizens without delay.

He also said that the economy is in trouble due to excessive wasteful spending, saying that the economy has not picked up speed due to the coronavirus pandemic and the cold war that has come in a different style in the world and the lack of reforms to be done in our economy.

Koirala said that there is a deficit of nearly Rs 200 billion in the government's expenditure and income till March 11 of the current financial year, and said that there is a compulsion to take loans not only for capital expenditure but also for current expenditure.

He said, "Let's proceed with political agreement to implement the reports made from time to time to reduce unnecessary expenses for a strong economy of the country."

Koirala also said that it is necessary to win the trust of the private sector to keep the economy running.
