KATHMANDU, June 16: Twenty-two opposition parties, including Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-UML, have announced a second phase of their protest program against the incumbent Baburam Bhattarai-led government on Saturday.

A meeting of the parties held in the capital this morning decided to go for fresh protest program on June 19-July 9, NC leader Arjun Narsingh KC told Republica after the meeting. [break]

The new protest is chiefly intended to put pressure for ending the existing constitutional vacuum and political crisis, KC said, adding that the parties would also expose the government intent to go for new elections of Constituent Assembly (CA).

The government has announced fresh CA polls for November 22, with the CA getting dissolved on May 27 without delivering a new constitution..

Concluding that the care taker prime minister, rather than paving way for national consensus, is embarking on foreign trips, the meeting decided to protest the PM’s upcoming visit to Brazil where he would take part in the Rio+20, United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, scheduled for June 20 to 22.

PM Bhattarai is slated to leave for Brazil on June 18, representing Nepal and the Least Developed Countries (LDCs).

The parties have also said they would boycott any programs attended by the current government ministers and would greet them with black flags all across the country as a gesture of protest.

The parties had earlier, in their show of strength, staged a protest mass gathering at Khullamanch in the capital . They have also been urging the president to intervene in government’s recent moves including its plan to bring new fiscal budget through ordinance.
