KATHMANDU, July 21: Three months after the launch of his fourth album, “Only Love,” industrialist and famed lyricist Basant Chaudhary held a discussion program on the same album last Tuesday at Nepal Tourism Board (NTB).

Attended by singers Ram Krishna Dhakal, Reema Gurung Hada, Shreya Sotang, and Hemant Rana who have sung in the album, the discussion was conducted by lyricists Kiran Kharel, Bishwombher Pyakurel, musician Nhyoo Bajracharya, and Chaudhary himself.[break]

“We have discussions on books, movies, but never on music,” shared Chaudhary, adding,

“Realizing your mistakes is tough. It’s hard to assess your own work. In my experience, writing a song is totally different from having a good knowledge about it.”

He added, “Dialogues offer artists different perspectives of their work. Critical analysis helps you grow.”

All praise for the album, Kharel said that its lyrics not only embodied love but expressed it in all its shades.

“Basanta talks of all the faces and the facets of love, from the vibrancy of young love to the matured time-tested triumphant love,” he expressed.

Economist Dr Bishwombher Pyakurel, himself an accomplished lyricist, was rather critical of the vocal aspects of the album.

“Basanta has a remarkable gift of crafting lyrics, and it has sheer magic when those words meet Nhyoo’s music. However, I do feel the singers could’ve done a bit more.”

On Pyakurel’s radar were Indian singers Shreya Ghosal and Kailash Kher. “I had high hopes from these two, and my expectations fall short [in the album]. Somehow, we failed to exploit their vocal prowess.”

Commenting on the acclaimed Nepali singer Ram Krishna Dhakal, Pyakurel was of the view that Dhakal had done too many of similar sounding songs.

Singer Shreya Sotang, who sang one of the much-loved tracks in the album, “Najik Chhaina,” shared that she had to do a double take for the single.

“The album is a great compilation of songs, and it was a pleasure being a part of this diverse entourage,” she said.

An exchange of views between the musicians and media personalities raised various issues ranging from style of writing to selection of singers. A very humbled Chaudhary answered some of the queries himself and thanked the invitees for their time.

The discussion was concluded by Hemant Rana, Ram Krishna Dhakal, and Reema Gurung Hada who also performed their respective songs from the album.

Mesmerizing the audience with the song “Timro Naam Japera,” Reema shared that her personal favorite was Shreya Ghosal’s “Chhayechha Basanta.” Not only did she seem to like the vocals and the music of the song, she also appreciated the music video.

“The actress in the video is beautiful, and she indeed adds to the beauty of the song,” she smiled.

The album, which took two years in the making, includes eleven songs, all penned by Chaudhary, while Nhyoo Bajracharya provided the music and arrangement to the lyrics.
