Air-rifle shooting player Rana has been nominated as the patron of the physical recreation section of the award. Along with Rana, Nepali rock star Robin Tamang, writer Jhamak Kumari Ghimire and Great Himalayan Trail completer Dawa Steven Sherpa are also nominated as patrons of service, skills and adventurous journey section respectively. According to Tina Stacey, the national director of the award, anyone aged between 14 and 25 years has to set objectives in each of the four areas -- service, physical recreation, skills and adventurous journey-- and work a minimum of six months to get bronze and silver medals of the award. For the gold medals, youths should also complete a residential project, where participants broaden their experience by staying in an unfamiliar environment with other young people, taking part in a worthwhile project.
The award is named after Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh (husband of Queen Elizabeth).According to Stacey, a national governing board has been initiated with representatives from NGOs, Department of Education, Scouts, British Council, the patrons and existing operators of the award. Thre are already five independent operators offering the award in Nepal.
