KATHMANDU, May 20: In the wake of public criticism, Ministry of Foreign Affairs has taken steps to make passport issuance system more convenient and extended the office hours from Thursday.

The ministry said it is opening at 8 in the morning from Thursday, two hours earlier than the unusual office hour. Chief of Protocol Mohan Krishna Shrestha said the ministry is opening even on Saturday.

Shrestha said the ministry is accepting passports forms from 8 am to 3 pm. The ministry is opening till 9 pm to distribute passports.

"We are planning to give priority to applications of people from remote areas," Shrestha said adding that the ministry has been giving priority to applications of children, elderly, poor and the sick on humanitarian grounds.

At present, only the ministry has been issuing passports after passport distribution from districts was suspended when the government failed to meet ICAO deadline to issue machine readable passports.

Officials said they are working to issue passports to people within two days of filing application. At present, one has to wait for a week. The ministry is issuing 800 passports on an average daily.
