"President Barack Obama announced his intent to nominate the following individuals for key administration posts," said office of the press secretary in the White House, in a statement. The US Embassy in Kathmandu forwarded the statement on Friday. Obama made nomination of Powell among other individuals for key administration posts.
When asked about the nomination of new Ambassador for Nepal, Information Officer in Embassy, Nicole Chulick said that it was too early to speak on that.
"We don´t know yet when the Senate would confirm the nominees including Ambassador Powell," Chulick told Republica.
President George W Bush had nominated Powell, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, as U.S. Ambassador to Nepal in March 2007.
The U.S. Senate confirmed her nomination on June 28 and Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte swore her into office on July 16, 2007. Ambassador Powell arrived in Nepal on August 6 and presented her credentials to the then Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala on August 9, 2007. She previously served in Kathmandu as a consular officer from 1980 to 1982 and as the State Department Nepal Desk Officer from 1982 to 1984.
