The district that borders on the capital has only 272 policemen, including one Deputy Superintendent of Police and three Police Inspectors, to look after a population of more than 2,50,000.[break]
Though there are 400 posts of the Nepal Police in the district, 128 slots remain vacant for almost three years now. "The government has directed us to beef up security in such a way that the police can reach any site of incident inside the district within 15 minutes. We are simply too understaffed to accomplish that," said Police Inspector Kushankumar Basnet at the District Police office (DPO).
Inspector Basnet also informed that DPO has received dozens of requests from the people in the rural areas to set up police posts to curb growing crimes in the district.
The DPO has informed that it requires additional 450 well-armed police personnel and a lot of vehicles to provide security of the crucial polls, which some political parties have warned to disrupt -- at any cost.
