KATHMANDU, May 8: The number of Nepali citizens returning to the country from India to cast their votes in the local level elections have increased over the past few days.

The number of Nepalis returning home from Gaddachauki on the western border of Kanchanpur is increasing day by day. Although 100 to 200 Nepalis used to return from India every other day through Gaddachauki checkpoint, over 500 Nepalis are returning home on a daily basis.

Vikas Bhatta, in-charge of Gaddachauki Health Desk in Kanchanpur, said that 500 to 800 people are returning to Nepal every day and this number is increasing. He said that the Nepalis who had gone to work in the neighboring country India are returning in view of the upcoming local level elections scheduled for May 13.

As the number of Nepalis returning from India has increased, data of Nepalis entering the country is being maintained. The Ministry of Health and Population has urged those coming to Nepal to stay in the mandatory quarantine for seven days and have urged unvaccinated citizens to follow the vaccination and mandatory health standards due to the recent spike in COVID-19 infection in India.

The returnees have complained that even if they cast their votes for any candidate, their votes have not been appreciated. They lamented that even though the candidates had made various commitments before the election, they had forgotten their previous commitments after the election. There is a demand from the citizens who have returned to Nepal from India that Nepali citizens should be freed from the compulsion to go abroad by creating employment in Nepal.

As the number of Nepali nationals returning home from India is increasing each next day, the commitment made by the leaders in the local level elections to find employment in the country is forgotten after the election, lamented the returnee migrant workers. As the employment problem has not been resolved, Nepali citizens are forced to go abroad for employment.
