KATHMANDU, July 13: Expecting to drastically increase its users, Nepal Telecom (NT) has introducted a broadband internet service based on CDMA technology called Evolution Data Optimized (EVDO) technology or the third generation (3G) CDMA at a very cheap rate.

Launched at Nagarik Edu Fare in the capital on Thursday, the internet package is bundled with a voice service named ´Sky Pro´, which provides voice and data services with a single Removable User Identity Module (RUIM) card. [break]

The offer includes a data card, a RUIM card with talk time of Rs 100, 1 GB memory and 5GB data for a month at Rs 2,359 inclusive of all taxes.

The users of 3G EVDO data service will have to pay 50 paisa per MB after the 5 GB data, which comes along with the package, gets over. This makes the service cheapest among all other services available.

After the offer gets over, NT said, it will come up with higher data packages. Increased competition among telecom companies and internet service providers has benefited the customers as they are getting internet service at a reduced price.

"As the service is the cheapest one, there was a huge queue of customers at the fare. We sold around 500 packages in three days, which means the customers have loved our package," said Sudan Lal Shrestha, a senior engineer with NT.

There was a huge queue to buy Sky Pro package on Saturday as it was a public holiday. According to NT, the offer will last for a period of one month.

NT spokesperson Guna Keshari Pradhan said that they have received an overwhelming response from the customers since the package was launched on Thursday. "As the package is cheapest, affordable and attractive, we sold 75 packages on the first day alone," said Pradhan.

The Sky Pro data service has a maximum downlink speed of 3.1 Mbps and uplink speed of 1.8 Mbps with a capacity to provide both voice and data service through same RUIM card.

"The service is currently available in 34 districts and will soon be expanded to all the 74 districts," said Anoop Ranjan Bhattarai, deputy managing director at NT.

NT said it has already installed microwave links in 72 districts, which will not only bring the cost further down in the long run but will also help to cover wider area.
