The NT, the largest telecom company in Nepal, had previously accumulated a deposit amount of Rs 5,000 per line from each PSTN subscriber of urban centers, including Kathmandu, Pokhara, Biratnagar and Birgunj. In order to make basic telephone services more affordable it had reduced this amount to Rs 3,000 some six months ago. [break]
“The excess of Rs 2,000 is now being deducted from the monthly bills of customers who had installed PSTN lines prior to the decision to reduce the deposit rate came into effect,” Sudhir Aryal, manager of NT’s accounting section said. “We have already made this adjustment in the monthly bill of Magh (mid-Jan to mid-Feb).”
However, the adjustments are being made at present on the telephone bills of customers who had subscribed to the lines for domestic purpose. “If the telephone is in the name of the company we can either adjust the amount in the company’s teleophone bill or give them the refund when they terminate the service,” Aryal said.
The NT has distributed around 350,000 PSTN lines throughout the country so far.
