NSVC to host age group volleyball tournaments

KATHMANDU, Oct 27: Nepal School Volleyball Commission (NSVC) is organizing 1st Pabson-School Commission U-18 Men’s and Women’s Volleyball Tournament from Sunday. 


Organizing a press meet in the capital on Friday, the organizers said that the tournament, which will run from October 29 to November 5, will be held at Dhorpatan Volleyball Training Center at New Buspark of Kathmandu. 


A total of 16 teams of women (eight from Kathmandu Valley and eight from outside the valley) and 23 teams of men (nine from Kathmandu Valley and 14 from outside the valley) will take part in the tournament. 


The teams in both categories will be divided into eight groups each. The competition will be played in the league-cum-knockout format.

Since there are only 16 teams in the women’s category, single win in the group stage will ensure the place in the quarterfinals for the participating teams. 


Similarly the men’s category will be played in league-cum-knockout format with top teams from each group will make places in the last 16. The winners of both the categories will be rewarded with Rs 100,000 each, while the runner-up will be prized with Rs 60,000. The third-placed team will get Rs 35,000. 


NSVC’s president Ram Kumar KC said that the tournament was being held in order to provide opportunities to the age-group players apart from selecting players for Nepal national U-18 volleyball team. 


“We are organizing this tournament after setting an objective to make the national team of age-group players,” KC said, “We will then select 24 best players from both men’s and women’s sections and train them in closed camps.” 


KC also informed that the selected players will given the opportunity to take part in the international tournament to be organized by Nepal Volleyball Association (NVA). He further informed that Association will organize U-16 and U-14 tournaments sooner. 


NVA’s president Manoranjan Sharma said that the effort from the effort of NSVC is praiseworthy and it is a good achievement for the whole volleyball game. 


“It is a praiseworthy thing that a tournament is being organized in age-group level as well for setting a goal for selecting players for the national team,” Sharma said, “The tournaments organized by private sectors in volleyball helps in identifying and nurturing them and I hope that these kind of works continues for upcoming days.”
