KATHMANDU, June 29: A US-based Non-Resident Nepali couple and their son have been diagnosed with the Pandemic H1N1 2009 virus, earlier known as swine flu.

The couple that arrived in Kathmandu with two kids on June 21 was confirmed on Sunday to have been infected, according to Dr Manas Kumar Banerjee, co-ordinator of Avian Influenza Control Project under the Epidemiology and Disease Control Unit (EDCU). Their eight-year-old son is also infected.

The couple arrived in Kathmandu on a vacation with two children from Washington D C. Infection was suspected after the eight-year-old boy complained of fever last Wednesday and gave his blood sample for tests.

The boy was confirmed to have been infected with the virus last Friday, Dr Banerjee said. And on Sunday, the boy and his parents were reconfirmed to have been infected with the virus.

“We have sent their blood samples to a WHO lab for further confirmation,” he said.

The couple was asked to agree to be quarantined with the boy at the EDCU, but they declined owing to a separate health condition of the boy.

“They are now in self-quarantine,” Dr Banerjee said.
