KATHMANDU, April 22: Citing serious differences with the government, all members of the National Planning Commission (NPC) including its vice-chairman Deependra Bahadur Kshetry resigned their posts on Monday.

Along with Kshetry, other three members of NPC Janak Raj Shah, Dr Shiba Kumar Rai, and Dr Abdur Rahim Mikrani announce their resignation at a press conference at NPC´s office.[break]

The resignations came a day after the UCPN (Maoist) leaders at the High Level Political Committee meeting on Sunday agreed to the removal of political appointees in several government bodies.

They tendered their resignation to the chairman of interim council of ministers Khil Raj Regmi, who is the chairman of the NPC.

“We announce that we are ethically unable to continue our duties as office bearers of NPC on the back of our widening differences with cabinet in the changed contest. However our decision to quit the posts is not due to pressure,” Kshetry told the press conference. Kshetry was appointed to the post by the former government led by Baburam Bhattarai on September 8, 2011.

Taking to Republica Kshetry also expressed his serious dissatisfaction stating that the government didn´t consult the NPC -- the apex planning body -- before announcing the new budget. “The government disregarded NPC in one after another case which created wider differences between NPC and Council of Ministers leading to our resignation,” said Kshetry.

He also voiced objection to the government decision to send NPC secretary Yuba Raj Bhusal to Bangkok to participate at the ministerial meeting of United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific. “Though the meeting should be represented by minister-level officials, the government sent secretary at the meeting and this weakened Nepal´s participation,” said Kshetry.

At the press conference he also made a detailed presentation of the work performed by his team over the tenure.
