BAGLUNG, April 12: UCPN (Maoist) spokesperson Dinanath Sharma, referring to the handover of PLA cantonments and weapons, said on Thursday his party has made concessions on the peace process and  that it is now other parties’ turn to be flexible for the new constitution.

Speaking to reporters in a program organized by the Maoist district committee in Baglung, Sharma said, “We did our bit in the peace process. Now we cannot show more flexibility in preparing the draft of the new constitution.” [break]

Sharma, also education minister in the current government, however said most of the disputed issues surrounding the constitution writing have already been resolved and expressed his confidence that the new constitution would be promulgated within May 27.

He described the burning of the effigies of the party’s top brass leaders by the rival Mohan Baidya faction Wednesday evening as an experiment on new forms of protest in the party and said "Such an instance in the past would have been a punishable act in the party. Let´s see what happens to them."

Regarding the party’s decision to hand over the cantonments and weapons, Sharma said Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal had consulted with Senior Vice-chairman Mohan Baidya, who leads the dissident faction, before deciding to end the Maoist control of the cantonments and arms.

“You can go on with the handover. We will protest it, anyway,” Sharma quoted Baidya as telling Dahal.
