KATHMANDU, Nov 21: Four years after the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), human rights bodies on Sunday expressed worries over the non-implementation of human rights commitments by both the parties to the CPA.

Issuing a joint statement, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Nepal (OHCHR-N) said failure to translate these commitments into actions may jeopardize the ongoing peace process.[break]

“Recalling the commitments made in the CPA, the NHRC and the OHCHR urge the parties to the agreement to, inter alia, stop withdrawal of criminal cases and comply with Supreme Court decisions in relation to human rights violations,” read the statement.

“Further delays in addressing conflict related human rights violations will encourage denial of justice for the victims and eventually strengthen a culture of impunity. These rights are fully guaranteed by national and international human rights laws regardless of the apathy by the parties,” the statement added.
