JAJARKOT, June 29: A rural municipality in Jajarkot district has decided to stop the salaries of teachers at government schools in its area if they do not send their children to government schools.

The decision was taken about a week ago during a meeting of the newly elected office-bearers of Kushe Rural Municipality. With the decision, they are trying to force government teachers in their area to send their children to government schools, and not private ones.
The rural municipality has claimed that the reason behind the decision is to make teachers more devoted to their work.

According to the rural municipality, teachers employed at government schools usually send their children to private schools. This has caused the teachers not to care about the progress and development of the schools they are employed at, leading to degradation of education quality.

“Teachers working at government schools do not send their children to government schools. This is why they do not feel a sense of responsibility towards their schools. We received a number of complaints from the locals, forcing us to take this tough decision,” said a representative of the municipality.

Chairman of the rural municipality, Hari Chandra Basnet said they will not release the salaries of the teachers who refuse to send their children to government schools. “We will implement the decision even if we have to stop the salaries of teachers for five years.”

He further added that teachers who teach at government schools of the rural municipality have to produce proof that their children are studying at government schools even if it is outside the district. The general public of the rural municipality has welcomed the decision. They also expressed commitment to help implement the decision.

“This is a very good decision and I really think it will help improve the situation of government schools in the district,” said Nirajan RC, a local of Kushe-9.
