KATHMANDU, Oct 12: Nepal Medical Council (NMC), the regulatory body for doctors, has suspended two doctors for falsifying the medical report in a rape case.

The NMC meeting held on Wednesday suspended Dr Rambha Goit (NMC registration number 10,206) and Dr Bijaya Kumar Singh (NMC registration number 3155), both belonging to state-owned Janakpur Zonal Hospital. The two doctors had falsified a medical report relating a 12-year-old rape victim on August 24. The medical report issued by the doctors stated that the girl was not raped.

Dissatisfied with the report of the Janakpur Zonal Hospital, the family members of the girl went to Siraha District Hospital to conduct a new test, which showed that the girl was indeed raped.

A probe panel with Attorney General Agni Kharel as coordinator and secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs, secretary at the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, and secretary at the Ministry of Health and Population as members had recommended action against Dr Goit and Dr Singh for the misconduct.

The NMC said the two doctors will remain suspended until further decision. An NMC committee led by Dr Kalu Singh Khatri, Prof Dr Hari Har Wasti, Dr Madhu Tumbahamphe and under-secretary Pushkar Raj Nepal suspended the two doctors.

The NMC team has also sought clarification from Dr Rakesh Kumar Singh (NMC registration number 21227) of Siraha District Hospital, who was involved in examining the rape victim. The NMC had summoned Dr Rakesh to question him about the matter, but he ignored the summons. “Now we have decided to seek clarification from him,” said Dr Krishna Prasad Adhikari, spokesperson of the NMC.
