NISTU has been protesting against the sacking of some teachers affiliated to it by St. Xavier´s School at Jawalakhel. [break]
President of Nepal ISTU Hom Kumar Thapa said the decision was taken after Minister for Education Ramchandra Kushwaha assured a NISTU delegation that he would handle the issue himself. "I am new to the job, so allow me some time to study the issue. I will resolve matters without any injustice to either party,” Thapa quoted Kuswaha as saying.
“In light of this, we have decided to take back all our protest programs including an indefinite strike at St Xavier´s Jawalakhel,” Thapa said.
NISTU had shut down all private schools in Kathmandu Valley on Monday and Tuesday, protesting the arrest of six of its officials on Sunday. However, St. Xavier´s remained open on Tuesday and the guardians of students there have vowed to keep the school open and running.
Police had arrested six NISTU officials, including Thapa and NISTU general secretary Amal Rai who were trying to obstruct school buses from St Xavier´s to enforce the indefinite strike at the school.
Twelve NISTU officials including Thapa were again arrested Tuesday morning, but they were released in the afternoon following which they went to submit a memorandum to Minister Kushwaha.
