On February 14, a boy from the Yadav community allegedly raped a girl from Mahato community in Patna village of the district. The incident was kept secret for two days. [break]However, when the victim´s family lodged a complaint with the police two days later, the Yadav community started harassing them to an extent that they had to flee the village.
According to a source, “Villagers from the Yadav community sought to settle the matter on their own. But when the Mahato family refused, the former started harassing them. They claimed that the family had brought disrepute to the village by reporting the incident to the police.”
The girl´s family currently has been living in an undisclosed location, said a relative preferring anonymity.
According to the area police office, Maheshowri, villagers from the Yadav community had pressed the victim´s family to settle the case outside the police station.
“In her statement to the police, the victim has said that the two youths raped her and left her near her house in the mid-night. She also said she had lost her consciousness after the incident,” said the police.
The District Police Office (DPO), Siraha informed that the girl was taken to Dharan for medical checkup. Superintendent of Police Manoj Neupane said search for the accused is on. He, however, refused to disclose the names of the accused.
