KATHMANDU, May 4:  Department of Food Technology and Quality Control (DFTQC) has sealed two go-downs of Nepal Food Corporation (NFC) where the state-owned food utility had stored 22,000 liters of expired edible oil.

Pramod Koirala, spokesperson of DFTQC, told Republica that they had sealed NFC´s go-downs in Thapathali and Nakkhu to prevent it from taking substandard mustard oil to the market for human consumption. [break]

“We have already asked NFC officials not to sell the edible oil for human consumption as they are harmful to human health,” Koirala said. He, however, said the oil could be used for industrial purpose.

Koirala also said they had asked NFC to recall expired edible oil from its outlets outside the capital.

NFC was preparing to sell the oil for Rs 84 per liter, down from the original price of Rs 112 per liter, to clear the stock at the earliest. Food technicians had told NFC in December that the oil should be consumed before March-end.

NFC had purchased 200,000 liters of mustard oil last year to intervene into the market that was seeing unprecedented rise in edible oil prices.
