KATHMANDU, May 25: New sub-variants of the Omicron variant of the COVID-19, called ‘KP 1' and 'KP 2,' detected in Nepal are found to have a high rate of spread out, while their fatality rate is relatively less.

Sagar Rajbhandari, an epidemiology expert, said the spread rate of the new variant of the disease is relatively higher. “However, the fatality rate is found to be less compared to other variants found before,” Bhandari said.

The National Public Health Laboratory reported that KP 1 was found in 12 samples and KP.2 in 17 samples. Similarly, KP 3 and KP 4 each were found in a single person, while carrying out ‘DNA Sequencing’ in the past few days.

Rajbhandari said people suffering from the new variants might undergo influenza suffering for a long time period. “However, the patients ailing from some chronic diseases must have to take extra precautions,” he said.
