PARBAT, May 19: Many new mothers, who were compelled to live with their newborn in tents following the earthquake, have started falling sick in Parbat district.

Sabitri Nepali, a new mother from Kushma Municipality-17, has fallen sick as she had been moved to a tent just six days after delivery. Her house was destroyed in the April 25 earthquake.

According to her family, she cannot even sit and walk properly, while her 25-day-old daughter is also unwell."Though we have not received any special care, we would not have fallen sick had we been moved to dry and warm place," Sabitri said. "At first we were happy after receiving a tent, but now we have started falling sick."

Monsoon, which is just a few weeks away, make life more difficult for us, she added.

Another new mother, Sapana Nepali, is going through similar experience. She also started living in a tent three days after delivery.

"I spent two nights with my baby under the open sky till we received a tent," said18-year-old Sapana.

"But the new mother and our baby have not been feeling well as it is cold during the night," her husband Manish told Republica.

Manish works as a daily wage laborer. After his house was demolished in the earthquake, he has not been able to leave his wife and baby alone in the tent, according to him.

The cases of Sabitri and Sapana are representative of many new mothers and babies who have been living in tents due to fear of strong aftershocks and have fallen sick.

The victims had expected the government to provide them with special relief support. However, they have expressed discontent with the government's apathy toward their plight.

"We have been affected badly. We have not received anything other than Rs 5,000 and a tent from the government," said Sabitri's family.

All the two dozen houses Kushma Municipality-17 have been destroyed in the earthquake. Following the damage caused by the earthquake, new mothers and newborns, children and the elderly have been hit the hardest.
