Nepathya: New hopes after Wembley success

KATHMANDU, Aug 9: If the 8,000-strong presence at Wembley Arena in London doesn’t signify the love for Nepathya, then what does? The constant updates in social networking sites by members of the audience were proof of their excitement at being part of the crowd that evening on August 3. This is the largest indoor concert for the band who kept the audience in high spirits by delivering their much loved songs, ‘Chhekyo Chhekyo,’ ‘Talko Pani,’ ‘Resham,’ ‘Salaijo,’ ‘Jogale hunchha bheta.’

Amrit Gurung, front man of Nepathya, gives voice to the experiences of Nepathya while in London.

We hear the concert went well. What are your thoughts?

The concert was simply amazing. We sang 21 songs during the two hours and 10 minutes of the concert. It’s fantastic for an artist to get the opportunity to perform at such a great place and for such a wonderful audience. Nepathya truly enjoyed performing for the audience there and it’s one of life’s most unforgettable moments for me.[break]

Is this the most number of people you’ve played for? How nervous were you?

The biggest concert was in Dang in 2004 where 50,000 people came to watch us. This, however, was the biggest indoor concert for us. Of course, stage fright is there but then it all disappears once you get into the excitement of the atmosphere. When the crowd shouted and cheered for us, we were all excited and ready to perform. I was more excited than nervous.

After Wembley, is there any stage you want to conquer?

There are many, of course: For instance, the O2 Arena, or the Royal Albert Hall in London. Wouldn’t it be remarkable to be able to perform with the orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall? I wouldn’t say soon, but maybe someday we may get that opportunity.

Did you get any sightseeing done while you were there?

We met our relatives, went on a brief tour of London, visited music stores and bought some instruments, like a guitar. My friends went to Stonehenge but I stayed behind to meet my relatives.

What will you remember the most from the concert?

The best part of the concert was the audience. We deeply appreciate their love for us. The Nepali population in the UK is not very large but the fact that they came together to watch us was wonderful. Once we started our performance, they sang along with us. Not just one or two songs but for the entire performance they sang and danced with us and that added to the excitement. We couldn’t do meet-and-greet because the crowd was very large. But then we met a few people later. A relative of mine called me up and informed me that she was able to meet up old friends whom she hadn’t met for the last ten years even though they were all in the UK. She said that they had a lot of fun and it was very exciting for them. They sat up all night talking and catching up. And she thanked us for giving them this opportunity.

What’s next for Nepathya?

We have a charity show in Hong Kong that is scheduled for October 26.
