From the streets of some 10 European countries, the mountaineers, who are also WWF Climate for Life Campaign Ambassadors, are delivering the message from the mountain communities like the Sherpas, whose livelihood has adversely been affected by the melting Himalayas. From Thursday onwards, the mountaineers will travel to Viterbo (Italy), Geneva (Switzerland), Chamonix (France), Vienna (Austria), Brussels (Belgium), and culminating at Copenhagen in Denmark where the UNFCCC conference on climate change is scheduled for December 7-18.

Dawa and Appa will also carry through Europe the declaration of Kathmandu to Copenhagen Climate Conference, recently concluded in the capital, the WWF-Nepal said on Wednesday. With support from the World Bank Group, Asian Development Bank, DFID, Embassy of Denmark Nepal and others, eight countries --Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Kyrgyz Republic - have come together to sign a Joint Statement urging the industrialized countries to come up with an effective Treaty at Copenhagen.

The campaigners are also set to meet with the Austrian president.

Meanwhile, the National Trust for Nature Conservation has finalized an official declaration for the Summitteers´ March scheduled for December 11 in Copenhagen on the sidelines of the UNFCCC meet.

The declaration said that the Summitteers´ Summit has been organized “to draw the attention of the world community” to the plight of the people living in the Himalayas and in order to recognize the significance of the role of the Himalayan region in regulating global climate regime, to acknowledge the ecosystem services the mountains provide to the larger section, to recognize the region as vulnerable, and take action to address the multiple problems including increased risk scenario due to rapid melting of glaciers and danger it poses to the lives and livelihoods of local communities.
