KATHMANDU, March 8 : Although participation of women in media is increasing in Nepal in recent years, they have not been able to realize gender equality, mainly due to lack of women friendly policies and other necessary institutional arrangements, according to study carried by International Federation of Journalists(IFJ).

The study conducted in the participation of Nepali women journalists has shown that despite significant progress women journalists continue to face discrimination and sexual violence both at workplace and outside. The study conducted in various six countries, including Nepal, India, Malaysia, Cambodia and Pakistan was released on Sunday on the occasion of Women's Day.

Senior journalist Anita Bindu, who is also Vice Chairperson of Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ), had carried out the research while Subhechhha Bindu had conducted analysis of media content. Over 100 women journalists working in various media houses in Nepal took part in the study conducted in the form of survey, interview and media content analysis.

The study has shown that there is negligible presence of women in the decision making level and professional security of women journalists remains weak in Nepali media. It further showed that there is lack of women friendly policy and practices to enhance professional capacity of women journalists.

Women journalists have complained that they are denied salary equal to their male counterparts. While one fourth of the women journalists taking part in the study had said that they had either faced or seen sexual violence at workplace, one third of them said they had faced other forms of violence at workplace.
