Nepali karatekas win 10 golds in South Asian championship

KATHMANDU (REPUBLICA): Nepali karatekas clinched 10 gold medals in the South Asian Karate Championship being held in Thimphu, Bhutan.

According to a press statement issued by the National Sports Council, Sunita Lama defeated a Bhutanese opponent 6-4 to win gold medal in the junior women´s 50 kg category on Sunday. [break]



Subhadra Shrestha (50 kg), Armila DC (45 kg), Sapana Lama (55 kg), Sunita Maharjan (61 kg), Rita Karki (68 kg) and Kalpana Basnet (above 68 kg) also clinched gold medals in their respective weight categories in the women´s section.



In the men´s section, Laxman Tamang (50 kg), Mondaykaji Shrestha (67 kg) and Bhim Bahadur Tamang (84 kg) won golds in their respective weight categories.



According to NSC, Purushottam Banstola and Chanchala Danuwar have reached the semifinals of individual kata in the two-day tournament, which features participants from Nepal, India, Bangladesh and Bhutan.
