Nepali, Bangla climbers atop Mt Chekigo

KATHMANDU, Oct 25: A joint team of Nepali and Bangladeshi climbers have successfully conquered the previously unclimbed Mt Chekigo (6,257m).



Congratulating the mountaineers, Secretary at the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation, Kishor Thapa, said the team has become successful in reaching the summit of the peak where 13 expeditions had failed previously. [break]He also requested for support and cooperation from all quarters to make Nepal Tourism Year (NTY) 2011 a grand success.



“We won´t be disappointed even if our target of welcoming one million visitors didn´t materialize,” he added.



Speaking at a press meet in Kathmandu, Pemba Dorjee Sherpa, leader of the Nepali team, said he was excited to climb the peak after reaching the summit of Mt Everest 10 times. “It is the most difficult peak I have ever climbed,” Sherpa said.



The expedition was jointly organized by Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) and Bangla Mountaineering and Trekking Club (BMTC). NMA officials have proposed the government to name the peak ´Nepal-Bangladesh Friendship Peak´.



Bangladeshi ambassador to Nepal Neem Chandra Bhowmi said Nepal and Bangladesh has a lot to offer to each other. He also said more than 40,000 Bangladeshis are expected to visit Nepal during NTY 2011 campaign.



During the press meet, NMA President Zimba Zangbu Sherpa informed that Nepal will host the general assembly of Union of International Alpine Association (UIAA) in October, 2011.



“A total of 350 Representatives from 76 countries will participate in the assembly,” he added.
