Nepal will benefit from BRI agreement with China: DPM Shrestha

KATHMANDU, July 2: Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha returned home today after completing a five-day visit to China.


Addressing a special press conference at the Tribhuvan International Airport, he said that his China visit was fruitful. During the visit, Deputy Prime Minister Shrestha and China’s Vice Premier He Lifeng had a bilateral meeting, he said, and that there was a positive discussion on development, trade and investment possibilities between the two countries.

He said that during his visit to China, trade, investment, tourism, connectivity and other issues were discussed between the two countries. He said that there was also a positive discussion on the issue of opening trade points and facilitating traffic on the Nepal-China border.


Shrestha said that the Chinese government is interested in the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which is an agreement with the Chinese government. He said that since the Nepal government had signed an agreement on BRI in 2070 BS, the implementation process would be finalized by creating the implementation modality. He believes that Nepal will benefit from the BRI agreement with China.


Deputy Prime Minister Shrestha said that they discussed with the officials of Sichuan Provincial Investment Group and called to increase investment in Nepal. He said that in the discussion with the officials of Sichuan Airlines, he requested to increase the flights on the Chengdu-Kathmandu route and start commercial flights from Chengdu to Pokhara and Bhairahawa airports. He said that Sichuan Airlines is ready to fly to Pokhara rather than Bhairahawa. Deputy Prime Minister Shrestha said that the Nepali delegation also inspected the Jinping Hydropower Station and the Dujiang Irrigation System.
