KATHMANDU, May 29: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has, for the first time, opened ambassadorial appointments to open competition, marking a major shift in Nepal’s diplomatic selection process.
The MoFA has issued a seven-page “Terms of Reference: Ambassador of Nepal,” inviting applications from qualified Nepali citizens for 13 vacant postings, including key countries such as India, China, and the United States.

The government said the move aims to make diplomatic appointments more transparent, merit-based, and competitive. Interested candidates can apply until June 5.
Applicants must be at least 35 years old and hold a bachelor’s degree. The MOFA has set strict eligibility criteria focusing on integrity, professional competence, and conflict-of-interest safeguards. Those convicted of corruption-related offences, dismissed from public service, or holding foreign residency status are ineligible.
Candidates are expected to have strong knowledge of Nepal’s foreign policy and international relations, along with fluency in English. Familiarity with the host country’s language will be an advantage.
The MoFA also requires compliance with international diplomatic frameworks, including the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic and Consular Relations, and excludes individuals with past conflicts of interest or foreign government-linked employment without a 10-year gap.
