Nepal's coronavirus death toll reaches 146 as nine more succumb to COVID-19 in the past 24 hours

KATHMANDU, Aug 22: At least nine people succumbed to novel coronavirus disease in various parts of the country in the past 24 hours, Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) said on Saturday afternoon.

At a virtual media briefing, spokesperson for the MoHP, Jageshwar Gautam, said that a six-year-old girl and a 67-year-old man from Sunsari district and three men ages between 48 and 61 from Parsa district died of coronavirus.

Likewise, deaths of a 58-year-old man from Bara district, a 68-year-old man from Siraha district, a 56-year-old man from Makawanpur district and 73-year-old man from Bhaktapur district are linked to coronavirus, according to Gataum.

"With these nine deaths recorded in the past 24 hours, 146 persons died of coronavirus as of today," he said.

Of the total coronavirus infections, the country's death rate stands at 0.5%, the spokesperson added.

The Health Ministry on Saturday also confirmed 634 new cases of coronavirus in the past 24 hours, taking Nepal's coronavirus tally to 31,117.

As many as 12,519 PCR tests were carried out in the past 24 hours in various laboratories across the country, according to the ministry.

Kathmandu Valley alone recorded 216 COVID-19 cases in the same period. The COVID-19 recovery rate, however, has been declining these days.

Spokesperson Gautam said that 136 persons who earlier had tested positive for virus were discharged after recovery in the past 24 hours. "With this, the number of people to be discharged after recovery has reached 18, 350," the spokesperson said.

There are currently 12,621 active cases of coronavirus in various parts of the country, according to Gautam.
