Nepal-Qatar agree to make labor migration more systematic

KATHMANDU, April 7: Nepal and Qatar have expressed commitment to take stern actions against those foreign employment entrepreneurs for taking additional amount from Nepalis migrant workers willing to go abroad for overseas employment.

An understanding was made to strictly monitor the recruitment process and blacklist those agencies that charge additional amount in a bilateral meeting held between a Nepali team led by State Minister for Labor and Employment Tek Bahadur Gurung and visiting Minister of Labor and Social Affairs of Qatar Abdullah Bin Salih Al-Khulaifi.


A joint press release issued by Ministry of Labor and Employment stated that the delegation of Qatar agreed to pay attention to ensure safety, security and welfare of the migrant workers. The Qatari delegation also informed on the recent amendment made in Labor Law to address the issues of migrant workers.

During the meeting, Nepali delegation requested the Qatari delegation for increasing demand for skilled and professional human resources from Nepal, providing pre-employment orientation for Nepalese migrant workers after their arrival in Qatar, regularizing the undocumented Nepalese workers and to facilitate them change their sponsorship, and underlined ensuring safety, security and welfare of the Nepali migrant workers in Qatar.

Qatar requested the Nepalese delegation to send two IT experts to Qatar to study about arrangements of keeping workers documents and for sharing it online and the Nepalese delegation agreed on it and said to communicate at the earliest.

Similarly, both the countries agreed to bring those foreign employment agencies and entrepreneurs, working in an illegal manner, under the ambit of legal action.

Both the ministers agreed to further develop and strengthen labor relations between Nepal and Qatar.

Meanwhile, State Minister Gurung accepted an invitation of Qatari Minister Khulaifi to Qatar visit.

Qatari Minister Khulaifi held separate meetings with President Dr Ram Baran Yadav, Prime Minister Sushil Koirala and Foreign Affairs Minister Mahendra Bahadur Pandey, among others.

Minister Khulaifi has returned home today. The high-level officials of the Ministry of Labor and Employment as Qatari Ambassador to Nepal, Ali Al-Hamer saw off the Qatari delegation at Tribhuvan International Airport. RSS
