Nepal Police records over 2,900 road accidents, 199 casualties in a month

Police have revealed that 2,906 road accidents took place across the country in the past month of Magh (mid-January to mid-February). According to the Nepal Police Headquarters, 4,535 vehicles were involved in these accidents, resulting in the death of 199 people.

KATHMANDU, Feb 17: Police have revealed that 2,906 road accidents took place across the country in the past month of Magh (mid-January to mid-February). According to the Nepal Police Headquarters, 4,535 vehicles were involved in these accidents, resulting in the death of 199 people.


According to the spokesperson for Nepal Police Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Dinesh Kumar Acharya, the majority of the accidents involved motorcycles. Out of the total number of vehicles involved in accidents in a month, 2,474 were motorcycles, marking involvement in 54.55 percent of the total accidents.

Similarly,  jeeps, vans, and micros have been involved in 21.21 percent of accidents. Among others, buses have been involved in 5.53 percent of accidents, trucks, tankers 6.2 percent, tractors 2.36 percent, and tempos 5.18 percent. Other vehicles including dozers and loaders have also been found to be involved in accidents.


The accident rates for various vehicles stood at 21.21 percent for jeep, cars and vans and microbuses; 5.53 percent for buses; 6.2 percent for trucks and tankers, 2.36 percent for tractors, and 5.18 percent for tempo auto vehicles.


The police headquarters has concluded that the most accidents occurred due to high speed, resulting in 1,179 accidents. Similarly, 864 accidents took place due to driver negligence; and 218 accidents due to drunkenness and others.


Additionally, police data shows that 199 people died in road accidents in the month. The deceased include 147 men, 39 women, 11 boys and two girls. Similarly, 560 people were seriously injured in those accidents and 3,351 people were slightly injured.
