Kathmandu/Birgunj, May 30: Police on Tuesday night nabbed India´s most wanted criminal, Babloo Dubey aka Mithilesh Dubey, 30, from the Sitapaila area of Kathmandu. After continuous effort for about two and half months, police were able to trap Babloo through his connection with a Nepali woman.

Babloo, a resident of Sishuwakhadaar Thana Kalyanpur in Motihari District of Bihar and notorious for his ransom calls and murderous assaults, was arrested by a squad from Narayani Zonal Police with the assistance of the Metropolitan Police Sector Office, Swayambhu. After his arrest from a flat at Sita Housing Colony at Sitapaila, he was taken to Birgunj and made public before the press at Narayani Zonal Police Office. [break]

According to Narayani Zonal Police chief SSP Sarbendra Khanal, Babloo has served 10 years in jail since 2001 for murder and bank robberies.

He had formed the Bihar People´s Liberation Army, an underground group, while serving jail terms four times at different intervals between 2001 and 2009. The group was accused of murdering more than 30 people in India, including doctors and engineers, and collecting over 100 million Indian rupees as ransom, according to SSP Khanal. Babloo admitted before the press that he has killed six people to date.

In the past few months, Babloo had been operating in India from Nepali territory. Indian police have been providing security to people who have received ransom calls and death threats from him and they had sought the help of Nepal Police in their search for the notorious gangster, SSP Khanal said. Indian Police had not been able to curb his activities as he fled to Nepal and it was very hard to trace him as he kept moving from place places and using different mobile sim cards.

According to police, Babloo stayed for five to six months in Parsa District and in the past two months he had been living in a luxury flat at Sitapaila with a Nepali assistant named Nirmal who is now on the run.

According to a source, police were able to identify a woman who was frequently in touch with Babloo and she came in handy for making the arrest. As per the police plan, the woman persuaded him to meet her at his residence and the police joint squad followed her.

SSP Khanal said, “We were under moral pressure to support the Indian police and as we also feared that he could create terror in Nepal with his resources in money and arms, we kept his arrest on high priority.”

Because of the lack of sophisticated technology, police were not able to arrest him though they were already close on his heels since 15 days before, but they later traced his calls with the help of experts and detected his location, Khanal added.

Police said Babloo was using over a dozen mobile sim cards from different locations in Parsa, Bara, Chitwan and Kathmandu.

According to Inspector Manjil Mukarung of Swyambhu police, he was watching TV when he was arrested. According to him, Nirmal had been assisting him ever since he came to Kathmandu and took the flat under his name. Babloo used Nirmal for moving about in Kathmandu by motorbike, Inspector Mukarung said.

SSP Khanal said they would hand Babloo to Indian police if the Indians want him but only after completing investigations here and fulfilling related legal procedures.

Police confiscated five mobile sets, SIM cards, Rs 173,000 and also Rs 60,000 in Indian currency from his possession.
