Nepal lacks 29,500 vets

CHITWAN, April 25: While the number of vets required in Nepal is 30,000, there are only 500 according to Dr Adarsha Pradhan, the president of Nepal Veterinary Association.



He was speaking at the World Veterinary Day function held at Bharatpur on Saturday.



Nepal has 50 million cows, buffaloes and goats. Figures show that one vet has to take care of 60,000 chicken and 40,000 cattle.



Since about 200 animal diseases are transmittable to humans, if animal health is not taken care of, it could have a direct effect on human health, said Pradhan.



At present, the Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science in Rampur, Chitwan and Himalayan College of Science and Technology, Kathmandu produce a total of 60 vets a year.
