Nepal fixes final date against Ireland

KATHMANDU, Oct 19: With a match in hand, Nepal on Monday secured a place in the final of the ICC U-19 World Cup Qualifiers beating the USA by six wickets at the Kinrara Academy Oval, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.

Prem Tamang bagged five wickets and Yogendra Singh Karki completed half century to guide Nepal in the final of the qualifiers. Undefeated Nepal has recorded three straight wins in the tournament to ascertain a top-two finish in the league round irrespective of the result of the last match. The top two teams will play the final.

Meanwhile, Ireland, which is also undefeated with one match in hand, too secured its berth in the final beating Uganda by 158 runs on Monday.

Nepal and Ireland are scheduled to play their last match of the round robin on Wednesday before they again meet in the final slated for Thursday.

The winner of the qualifiers will secure a place in the U-19 World Cup to be held in Bangladesh next year.

Nepal, winning the toss and opting to field first, restricted the USA on 109 runs in 46 overs in the match reduced to 48 overs per side due to rain.

Prem Tamang bagged five wickets giving away only 31 runs in nine overs as he also maintained a maiden over.

Similarly, Aarif Sheikh, who picked up two wickets of the USA, was most economic bowler for Nepal as he conceded only nine runs in 10 overs. Aarif maintained four maiden overs. Sushil Kandel and Dipendra Singh Airee pocketed a wicket each for Nepal.

The USA started its innings poorly against disciplined Nepali bowling, losing four wickets within 22.4 overs with only 46 runs on board and kept on losing wickets at regular intervals.

However, opener Sagar Patel, who faced 105 balls to top score 44 runs, helped the USA pile up a respectable total despite any significant partnership.

Similarly, Tohidul Islam added 14 runs off 17 balls and Gaurav Patanker contributed 11 runs facing 16 balls.

Sagar hit a six and three fours, Tohidul cracked three fours and Gaurav hit two boundaries for the USA.

In reply, Nepal achieved the 109 runs target in 17.5 overs under the D/L method losing four wickets. Yogendra Singh remained not out on 53 runs facing 46 balls. Yogendra hit 11 fours to help his side win the match comfortably.

Nepal lost its opener Shankar Rana (12 off 8) cheaply with 20 runs on board. However, Yogendra added 39 runs with Sunil Dhamala (17 off 24) for the second wicket and shared 41-run partnership with unbeaten Saurav Khanal (16 off 12) to secure the victory.

Saurav hit six in the fifth ball of the 18th over as Nepal needed only one run to win the match.

In another match of the day at Royal Selangor Club, Ireland posted 225/8 in allotted 50 overs against Uganda with 90 runs from Lorcan Tucker. In reply Uganda managed only 97 runs in 23.5 overs.
