Along with Nepal, Albania, Benin, Bolivia, Canada, Colombia, Croatia, Haiti, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Mauritius, Netherlands, San Marino, South Africa, Sudan, Tunisia, Turkmenistan and the United States have also made it to the 54-member UN organ. [break]
The 18 members will now replace outgoing Argentina, Bahamas, Bangladesh, Canada, Chile, Comoros, Egypt, Ghana, Iraq, Italy, Mongolia, Netherlands, Philippines, Rwanda, Slovakia, Ukraine, United States and Zambia.
Previously, Nepal was elected as member of the ECOSOC during the years 1980-1982 and 2001-2003, and also served as its vice-president for the years 1982 and 2003. The ECOSOC is one of the UN´s principal organs which deals with economic, social and environmental issues.
