Issuing a press statement on Wednesday, PMO office stated that though the prime minister's office time and again directed top officials of the Department of Roads (DoR) and Melamchi Drinking Water Project (MDWP) to complete Sinamangal-Maitidevi-Dillibazar-Ratnapark road section on time, but the project officials turned a deaf ear.Secretary of PMO Shanta Raj Subedi held a meeting with chief of the DoR, Kathmandu Valley Road Improvement Project and MDWP at his office after there was still no progress on the projects.
At the meeting, he said the authorities were quick to blame contractors for delay but were reluctant to take action against them. "So, officials responsible for taking action have been protecting contractors. So, I have asked director general of the DoR to evaluate work performance of its officials," said secretary Subedi.
Though the construction of the Sinamangal-Maitidevi-Dillibazar-Ratnapark road section started two years ago, it has yet to be completed.
Officials at DoR say it will take more than six months for road construction to complete.
Last week, locals of Purano Baneshwar planted rice on the muddy road to vent their ire against the authorities for delay in completion of the road. Following this, the DoR had expedited construction of the road.
Secretary Subedi has directed the DoR to prepare an action plan and immediately start constructing the roads that were expanded but not yet blacktopped.
