KATHMANDU, Nov 12: Nepal Communist Party (NCP) on Monday made several key appointments to fill up the few remaining vacant seats in the central organizational departments of the party.

The ruling party's secretariat meeting held at the prime minister's residence in Baluwatar unanimously appointed Amrit Bohara as the chief of the disciplinary commission of the party, while Ashok Rokaya was appointed the secretary of the commission.

Bohara, a highly regarded figure among the communists, was heading the then CPN-UML's disciplinary committee before the party merged with the CPN (Maoist Center) in May last year.

Other key appointments include Bishnu Pukar Shrestha as the chairperson of the party's election body, Pushpa Kandel for the party's audit commission, Keshav Badal as the chairman of the party's central advisory committee and Nanda Kumar Prasain as the head of the party's senior citizen forum.

Badal and Kandel are from the then UML faction, while Shrestha and Prasain are from then Maoist faction.

The meeting ended without appointing office bearers for the party's overseas chapter.

“Discussions were held over some possible names. It might take a few more days for the appointment,” NCP spokesperson Narayan Kaji Shrestha told reporters after the meeting.

Monday's appointments mark some progress in the party's unification process that has been lingering for over a year. The delays have given way to widespread frustration and raised further uncertainty regarding the unification of the party.

Contrary to the expectation, the meeting did not dwell on Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli's long-stalled plans to reshuffle the cabinet, according to Shrestha.

The likely reshuffle of the cabinet has dominated the headlines following the so called resignation of PM Oli's advisors en masse. Shrestha said that it was up to PM Oli to decide whether or not to reshuffle the cabinet.

“The issue would be discussed but let the prime minister first bring the proposal to the party,” said Shrestha.
