MORANG, Jan 17: Police have arrested a Nepali Congress leader from Budhiganga in Morang district on charges of attempting to rape a girl.
Morang Police Spokesperson DSP Manjil Mukarung said that Shiva Koirala, a 51-year-old Congress leader of Budhiganga Rural Municipality-1 was arrested on Sunday on the charge of attempting to rape a girl. According to DSP Mukarung, a preliminary investigation revealed that Koirala had tried to rape a 10-year-old girl by taking her to the backyard of a shop near his house on December 25, 2021.
According to the police, the incident came to light after the girl told her parents that he had tried to rape her. The girl has informed her parents that Koirala had repeatedly sexually abused her even before this. However, police received information about the incident only two days later.
After the incident, the locals took Koirala under control and even attacked him. According to police, Koirala was beaten and assaulted on the head and face. Koirala, who was injured in the attack, has been admitted to Koshi Hospital in Biratnagar for treatment, police said.
Koirala, who is also the former chairman of Tankisinwari Jaycees, has been involved in politics based in Tankisinwari area of Budhiganga. He is the representative of the General Convention of Province 1 under the 14th General Convention of the Nepali Congress. Police said that further investigation has been launched into the case of rape against Koirala.
