NC lawmaker Sharma among five arrested for alleged counterfeit educational certificates

KATHMANDU, Aug 11: Five medical doctors including lawmaker of the ruling Nepali Congress (NC) Sunil Kumar Sharma have been arrested in connection with the alleged counterfeit educational certificates.

The chief of Nepal Police's Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), AIG Kiran Bajracharya, confirmed the arrests of five doctors including Sharma. The other detained individuals have been identified as Dr Rambabu Yadav, Dr Ranjit Yadav, Dr Elina Shah, and Dr Amit Chaudhary.

These individuals were reportedly employed across various medical institutions, including hospitals and medical colleges. NC lawmaker Sharma was elected from Morang-3 as a member of the House of Representatives (HoR).

The CIB is scheduled to organize a press conference on Friday to release further details in connection with the arrests.

Earlier on Thursday, the CIB team apprehended lawmaker Sharma from Golfutar area of Kathmandu. CIB sources said the Parliament Secretariat has been informed of Sharma's arrest.

Sources said police launched the operation based on information received from credible sources that they were utilizing fraudulent Indian certificates for registration with the Nepal Medical Council. They allegedly participated in the NMC’s registration certificate examination showing the forged certificates.

CIB officials said a thorough investigation into the authenticity of their educational certificates is currently being carried out by the police. CIB sources said the academic certificate of ISc of Sharma was found to be fake. 

Meanwhile, NC Chief Whip Ramesh Lekhak said that his party will make an official position on the arrest of Sharma only after learning the cause behind his arrest. The issue of the arrest of NC lawmaker Sharma was discussed during the NC’s Parliamentary Party meeting held on Thursday.
