KATHMANDU, Sept 26: Nepali Congress held its municipal level convention in more than 50 districts on Saturday. Municipal conventions have been held in most of the 64 districts where active membership distribution has been finalized.
The NC, which started its ward convention on September 3 as a part of the party's 14th general convention held its second tier (municipality) level convention on Saturday. In some of the local level conventions, the leadership has been elected unanimously.
In most cases, there was competition for the leadership between the establishment and the rival faction within the party. Although some municipalities inaugurated the convention on Saturday, they are preparing to hold elections for the new leadership on Sunday. Some local levels have taken more time in a bid to elect the leadership in consensus.
The convention could not be held in more than a dozen districts as the voter list has not been finalized yet. The local level convention did not take place in Kathmandu, Kavre, Sindhupalchowk and other districts on Saturday. The municipal convention in Kathmandu is scheduled for October 2. The convention has fallen uncertain due to some disputes in Sindhupalchowk.
The rival faction led by Ram Chandra Poudel had earlier proposed to hold the convention on the same day at all 753 local levels only after finalizing the active membership of all the districts. However, President Deuba was not ready for it and decided not to stop the convention of the municipality in the 64 districts where the ward convention was already held.
In addition, the NC has decided to conclude the convention of all local levels in 21 Himalayan districts before Dashain. In the rest of the districts, lower level conventions will be held only after the Dashian festival.
