KATHMANDU, Sept 22: In a clear manifestation of deepening crisis within the Nepali Congress, both establishment and the Sher Bahadur Deuba faction held separate meetings on Wednesday to reinforce their position in regard to the dissolution of the four sister organizations of the party.

Party President Sushil Koirala held a meeting with central committee members close to him and committed to implement the dissolution of Nepal Tarun Dal, Nepal Mahila Sangh, Nepal Janjati Adhibasi Sangh and Prajatantra Senani Sangh, according to a leader close to Koirala. [break]

Similarly, Deuba also met with the leaders close to him at his residence at Budhanilkantha Wednesday morning. The meeting decided to reject the decision to dissolve the sister organizations made by the majority of central working committee members.

“We strongly oppose this undemocratic decision. This has revived the tradition of appointing favorites to the important party positions,” Deuba said after meeting his supporters who have been on hunger strike against the party move since Monday at the party headquarters at Sanepa.

The meeting, according to Bal Krishna Khand, who is close to Deuba, concluded that the decision of dissolution hurt the party unity and agreement reached at the time of party unification.

The faction has encouraged its supporters from the dissolved sister organizations to continue their fast-on-to-death protest until the decision is corrected.

“At the time of the party unification between the NC [led by late Girija Prasad Koirala] and the NC-Democratic [led by Deuba], it was agreed that the sister organizations themselves would hold their general conventions to elect new leaderships,” said Khand.

Khand said that Deuba would take further decisions after consulting former central committee members and parliamentarians.

In the meantime, NC leaders Ram Chandra Paudel, Dr Ram Sharan Mahat, Gagan Thapa met the agitating supporters of the dissolved sister organizations and urged them to withdraw their protests.

Supporters of both the rival factions have been organizing hunger strikes at the party headqaurters Sanepa for and against the dissolution of the party wings.

Deuba supporters on fast unto death

DOTI: Protesting the decision of the Nepali Congress (NC) central working committee to dissolve the party´s sister organizations, supporters of the Deuba faction have started a fast-unto-death from Tuesday afternoon.

Central Councilor of Nepal Tarun Dal Laxman Khadka, Vice-president of Doti Tarun Dal Prakash Saud, District Secretary Laxman Shah and Vice-Chairman of Nepal Student Union, Achham, Top Raj Dhungana, among others, are observing a fast-unto-death. “We will continue our protest until the party comes up with a solution regarding the sister organizations,” said Khadka, adding, “Sister organizations should be allowed to choose their leader themselves.”
