The country´s oldest party had not carried out any campaign in the district -- a hotbed of Maoist activities during insurgency -- since 1996. The NC cadres reached villages in Rukum district as a part of their awareness campaign.[break]
According to NC Rukum District Committee President Man Bahadur Bishwakarma, the party will form village committee, organize assemblies, interact with party cadres and conduct orientation programs in the district. Two separate teams of the party´s District Committee will carry out the campaign.
There are no village level committees in most VDCs in Rukum district.
NC had last organized party´s program in the district on the eve of Constituent Assembly election back in April, 2008. Maoist had killed a total of 78 NC cadres in Rukum during the insurgency.
Bishwakarma said NC cadres were not politically active in the district due to an environment of fear owing to Maoist violent activities. “The cadres who didn´t want to come to the villages here for fear of the Maoists are now ready to be a part of the party´s village level committee,” Bishwakarma said. He said that they plan to revive the party´s organization in the district.
