A group of 15 Maoists wielding rods and sticks attacked the group of representatives who were gathered at Karmacharya Wax and Food Pvt Ltd at Lekhnath municipality to settle the disputes in the company´s recently formed trade union.
The dispute erupted after the Maoists objected to the inclusion of a member to the union formed by NC-affiliated unionists. The Maoists accused the NC-affiliated unionists of including the names of Maoists in the union.
According to officials, 59 members are affiliated to the Maoists whereas 53 are affiliated to the NC in the company. But the Maoists claimed that even among the 53 members, the NC unionists have deliberately included the names of Maoist members.
"The Maoists attacked our friends to discourage forming trade union chapters by other parties," said Murari Sharma, chairman of the Kaski chapter of the Trade Union Congress. However, Maoist-affiliated unionists described the incident as a minor brawl.
