KATHMANDU, March 19: CPN-Maoist-affiliated All Nepal Communication, Printing and Publications Workers Union (ANCPPWU) activists Tuesday attacked the Ncell head office in New Baneshwor, causing some physical damage to the telecommunication office.
The Maoist unionists were staging demonstration outside the Ncell office in protest of removal of 87 staff of Hello Nepal, another telecommunication company the protesters said was taken over by TeliaSonera, which owns majority stakes in Ncell. [break]
The corporate communication expert of Ncell, Milan Mani Sharma, pleaded ignorance about the ANCPPWU´s demand. "Ncell has not been informed by anybody of any such demand, yet. The way the incident has happened is very unfortunate. Ncell has nothing to do with the attackers," Sharma said.
Jamnadev Jaishi, the coordinator of ANCPPWU, however claimed that they resorted to attack after police intervened while Shalikram Kafle, a leader of the union, was addressing the protesters. Five ANCPPWU activists have been injured in the ensuing clash with police, while some others have been detained.
