NPIA President Pushpa Man Shrestha and director general of NBSM, Dr Sitaram Joshi, signed the MoU on behalf of their respective organizations.
After signing the MoU amid an interaction on ´Chyangra Pashmina´s Collective Trademark -- Its use and process´, Joshi said the MoU has been signed as per the Public Private Partnership (PPI) program initiated by the Ministry of Commerce and Supplies. He urged all the manufacturers to support the NBSM by providing samples of their pashmina yarn for quality test.
“The Chyangra Pashmina trademark has already been registered in 39 countries across the world. It is in the process of getting registered in seven more countries,” said Shrestha.
Rebecca Ordish, consultant and advisor of NPIA, suggested that the manufacturers use â symbol in pashmina products to be exported to countries where the Chyangra Pashmina trademark has already been registered and ´TM´ symbol on products to be exported elsewhere.
Nepal´s pashmina exports dropped by 36 percent in the fiscal year 2009/10, as compared to the export figures of 2008/09.
With the new trademark of Nepali pashmina products, NPIA is hopeful that the exports will increase in the coming years. NPIA is planning to establish a co-operative to import pashmina yarn in large volume.
In order to receive the Chyangra Pashmina trademark, manufacturers must be the member of NPIA and follow the association´s code of conduct, according to the NPIA officials.
“We will take strong action against manufacturers if they are found using the trademark in an unauthorized manner,” said Mandu Babu Adhikari, chief program officer of NPIA.
The association is promoting Chyangra Pashmina trademark in national and international market in an aggressive manner.
