KATHMANDU, June 11: The Nepal Bar Association (NBA), an umbrella organization of lawyers across the country, has expressed dissatisfaction over the recent appointments of judges at the appellate and district courts.

A meeting of the executive committee of NBA held in the capital on Tuesday accused the Judicial Council (JC) of making recommendations for judges´ appointments “opaquely”. [break]

Issuing a statement after the meeting, NBA General Secretary Sunil Kumar Pokhrel said the move has raised a question over the relevance of the criteria set by JC for judges´ appointment.

It has also expressed unhappiness over non-implementation of the understanding between JC and NBA on appointing 50 percent judges from among law practitioners.

Likewise, NBA has condemned the JC for not recommending law practitioners for the post of district court judges. It has accused JC of taking the decision under pressure from judiciary employees.

Similarly, NBA has expressed dissatisfaction with JC for not appointing any judge from the Dalit community. JC on Sunday night had recommended appointment of 80 judges at appellate courts and 89 judges at the district courts across the country.
