The CCCI had announced Narayanghat bazaar banda on Thursday evening warning that it would intensify its protests unless the decision of action against the shopkeeper is withdrawn. [brea]
The DRI has said Laxminarayan Bastralaya has evaded VAT amounting to Rs 45,808,823 (Forty five million, eight hundred and eight thousand and eight hundred and twenty three rupees) and has ordered the shopkeeper to clear the tax.
The CCCI has taken to the streets saying that DRI has taken action against the shopkeeper not based on the facts but it has been rather motivated by revenge.
On August 30, the DRI had sent a letter to Laxminarayan Bastralaya ordering the shop to clear VAT within 15 days. There is still more than a month left for seeking a legal solution to the issue, according to shopkeeper Laxminarayan.
He further said today’s protest is only a gesture, a stronger protest will be carried out after the CCCI meeting on Monday, said CCCI President Dr Tilchandra Bhattarai.
The DRI has decided to take action against Laxminarayan based on the transaction details submitted by him at the Rastriya Banijya Bank for loan which do not concur with the transaction details furnished at the Inland Revenue Department.
However, the CCCI argues that it would be unfair to take action against Laxminarayan for tax evasion based on the transaction details submitted at the bank for loan.
Last year, on September 9, a DRI team led by Under Secretary Bharat Raj Subedi had carried out a raid on Laxminarayan Bastralaya. The irate traders had hit the streets and torched the jeep used by DRI team.
