Nabita enters knockout stage in Gwangju

KATHMANDU, July 9: Nepal's number one woman table tennis player Nabita Shrestha on Thursday entered into the knockout stage of singles event in the 28th Summer Universiade being held in Gwangju, South Korea.

Nabita beat Yasmine Nasri of Algeria 11-8, 11-8, 11-8 in the Group 22 match (league stage) at the Jangseong Honggildong Gymnasium. Nabita, who enjoyed walk over from Fatmata Karama of Sierra Leone earlier, will play against Olga Bliznet of Republic of Moldova on Friday in last league match and will progress to the knockout stage irrespective of any outcome.Meanwhile, Anita Maharjan faced 4-11, 1-11, 2-11 defeat at the hands of Roxana Istrate of Romania and 4-11, 2-11, 4-11 against Kristina Seiton of Estonia in women's singles group stage. Likewise, men's national champion Deep Saun beat Mohamed Teffahi of Algeria 11-7, 11-3, 11-5, while Jackie Maharjan registered 11-8, 11-6, 11-6 win over Mohammed Ali of Algeria in men's singles event league stage.

Avay Raj Shrestha faced 11-9, 9-11, 9-11, 9-11 defeat against Rodriguez Rivas of Venezuela, Binesh Khaniya was defeated by Ilia Shamin of Russia 9-11, 4-11, 4-11 and Ashish Awale faced 7-11, 11-1, 11-9, 12-10, 11-8 defeat by Joseph Ajami of Lebanon in the same event.
